Datapipe Sounds Off on Hybrid Cloud Trends

There’s the public cloud and the private cloud – and then there’s both. Consumers as well as a growing number of companies are familiar with the benefits of the public cloud through services such as Gmail and Dropbox (News - Alert). Enterprise employees, on the other hand, are familiar with the private cloud through their corporate solutions that allow BYOD, telecommuting and enterprise-ready mobile usage. The combination of the two – the hybrid cloud – is not quite as well known, but it is proving to be the way of the future.


“As cloud offerings added vertical business capability offerings to the horizontal IT capacity services, the adoption question changed from ‘if’ to ‘when’ and the answer frequently is now,” according to a recent report by Deloitte Consulting.

This has required mixing public and private cloud offerings and creating an environment of multiple clouds blended together simultaneously.

The first to do this have notably been small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs), since there was a necessity to leverage the public cloud due to a lack of resources, but now enterprises are getting on board, too.

"In the past year, we've seen hybrid cloud really catch on, especially with enterprise,” noted Bill Dolan, vice president of business development for Datapipe (News - Alert), during a recent TMCnet interview with him from Cloud Expo 2012 in New York.

“Enterprise was really lagging behind small and medium businesses,” he added. “For over ten years, we've been working with a lot of enterprise clients…and people like that were trying out cloud. Now, we really see adoption picking up quite a bit.”

Datapipe provides managed hosting, security and IT services, including cloud computing, infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS), so the company is undoubtedly in a prime position to see these trends.

“There’s a very clear difference in the thinking of CIOs who see their jobs as selectively applying technologies to strategic needs versus those who are focused on compliance and risk aversion,” noted a recent Forbes article about hybrid clouds, mirroring Dolan’s perspective. “The former see their enterprises moving to public and hybrid clouds quickly to better integrate with dealers, distributors and suppliers at a strategic level.”

At the end of the day, hybrid clouds are about getting things done – same impulse that has spawned BYOD.

This “get-things-done” approach has given hybrid cloud models the momentum needed for total success, but in the process, some of the value proposition of the cloud can get lost; anywhere access may make business easier, but it no longer can be said that the cloud makes IT easier. Using just one cloud might be easier for some, but now there are many to manage in the push for ubiquitous access on any device.

That said, the value proposition of the hybrid cloud still makes sense, which is why enterprises and not just SMBs are moving to the model at a noteworthy clip.
